The gouge is presented on its side with the flute pointing in the direction of
the cut. When producing hallows - a
scooping action is required to maintain bevel contact. When producing beads - a
rolling action is adopted - the tool
ending up on its side. Always cut from large to a smaller diameter - never cut
uphill.
