bought this lathe 3 years ago, it had metal gears, i'm not commercial, but i use it often, it had a little bite of rust but nothing to worry about, precision is good for me, the bad side i would say , if you have to changed speed for threads, you have to change the gears, but other than that, its a great lathe.

For the money paid, this is one he11 of a good little lathe.
As long as super precision isn't needed, this thing will be your friend for a long time.

I've had this for ~2 years now and so far its stood up. When turning between centres a cylinder will off perfect by about 0.002-0.003" - as measured by my digital callipers. Not bad for a starter lathe. The wrenches included are soft. I had to replace the 8mm wrench used to tighten the tool post bolts. The screws that hold the compound rest down had worn, so I machined and hardened a new set. I've had 8" pipe (8.65" od) in the 5" four jaw chuck. I've parted off 2" steel bar stock. Currently, I'm using it to help me build the Gingery bandsaw. I'd buy it again.
