    Great machine for the money

Posted by Gary Stein on 5th May 2022

Purchased this machine a while ago and so far am very impressed. Almost ALL parts are cast iron. Table has been surface ground and is very straight and flat. Hold down clamp arms are cast and machined aluminum but seem stiff enough to hold quite well. Love the split nut on the quick release front vise. Makes for quick movement of the clamp pad to the work. Make sure the nut is closed on the acme thread bolt, tighten down and it holds great. Cast iron mount for quick release vise is super strong. Toggle clamps for the vertical hold downs are plastic. Metal ones would be nice. The tilting head requires loosening and re-tightening of two bolts in the back of the machine to tilt the head. Kind of a pain, some sort of quick release and lock mechanism would be better. Cast iron hand wheels on quick release vise and sliding table gear are heavy duty. As with all machines of good quality that use cast iron for the frame, tables, fences, etc. expect to have to do a bit of cleaning of the protective oil and grease covering the bare iron surfaces. Better than opening the crate to find a rusty machine inside, and worth the cleaning work to have cast iron instead of cast aluminum. I disassembled the entire machine, degreased all parts and recoated all bare metal with paste wax. Have had success keeping my other cast iron machines running great this way. Dovetails on the cast iron slides needed a bit cleaning, had paint on them that needed to be removed. Motor runs great, 1 hp 3450 rpm would be better, but the 3/4 hp 1725 rpm has no trouble putting half inch wide mortises in oak and maple if you go easy. Would have given 5 stars except for the motor and the aluminum and plastic parts.
