Introducing the No. 4-1/2 smoothing plane, part of a new line of high quality woodworking hand planes from Busy Bee Tools. This smoothing plane is the wider version of the No.4 and is the ideal tool for preparing surfaces for final finishing. The wider blade and more mass is perfect for those who prefer a heftier plane. This plane makes short work of removing machining marks or bringing parts to final size. This is a great plane that is also well suited for quick chores like trimming doors, flushing cabinets or any simple planing task.
Modelled after the original Stanley No. 4-1/2, this plane is cast from ductile iron and the sole is ground flat. The comfortable handle and knob are made from sapele and finished with oil, offering great control of the plane in use. The plane has two separate adjustors that allow the user to advance and retract the blade with one adjustor and shift the blade side-to-side to centre the cut with the other.
The blade is made from O1steel and is hardened to 58-62 HRC which will take a fine edge. The chip breaker is made from CRCA steel and it greatly reduces the amount of tear-out in use. This plane comes packaged in a durable and attractive, foam-lined box that can be kept for safe storage. The craftsperson will truly enjoy using this high quality, well-made plane for many years and projects to come.

4.5 smooting plane
The plane does need some work before using it for the first time. There are plenty of videos on youtube about that. After you spent 1-2 hours setting it up, I find it does work well. Well enough for a hobbyist like me.

4 1/2 smoothing plane
I bought this on a bit of a whim because I was curious. So far I have read good things and wanted to see for myself. I normally use wooden bodied planes so the heft of this was a surprise. It is a big, heavy plane, and much to my delight, well and cleanly machined. Everything was square, took me about minutes to clean off the shipping grease and run the blade over the diamond stones, full width paper thin shavings —- adjustment is nice and tight. A very nice plane, not sure how it will fit in my work flow of mostly wooden bodied planes, but it will fit in. Very nice.

Close to great - if you have the time
Couldn’t decide if I would rate this plane a five star or a one star - so I chose a 3. Be prepared to spend a TON of time dialing this plane in. My biggest beef is the blade adjustment knob contacts the hand tote preventing you from advancing the blade. Be prepared to shave a 1/4” off the bottom of the tote before you even get started on the rest. Once done though, the plane works great - a five star - but be prepared to spend a lot of time with it to get it there. So close to a perfect hand plane - and yet so very, very far.
