Machinery Installation Tips

By: Gord Thorogood

There are certain procedures that must be followed to ensure that your machinery will perform with the accuracy of which it is capable.

First, when dealing with heavy machinery, it is always necessary to get the help of a few friends. Putting together a machine, moving heavy tools around in a basement can actually be a fun weekend project with a few of your closest buddies. Take care of your back and ensure that you are not lifting too much weight. Know your capabilities.

Machinery - Large cast machinery will flex over a period of time to conform to the contour of the floor it is on. The machine must therefore be placed on a solid foundation. When on a concrete floor, the floor should be as thick as possible and not broken or unstable. Whenever possible, the machine should be bolted to the floor.

All machinery should be levelled using a precision level and should be levelled both along the ways and across the ways for the total length of the machine. A distortion of only a few thousands of an inch is magnified into a loss of precision of many times that amount and the vendor cannot be responsible for any inaccuracies arising from an improper installation.

A good machine and a proper installation add up to long term trouble free operation.
